Community Notes

-- Air Force Airman 1st Class Troy O. Henshaw, son of Calvin and Sue Henshaw of Clermont, has been assigned to the 3rd Aerial Port Squadron at Pope Air Force Base, Fayetteville, NC. Henshaw, an air transportation apprentice, is a 2007 graduate of Citrus Heights Academy in Clermont.

-- Army Pfc. Kenneth M. Rosser, son of Ken Rosser of Mascotte, has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Ga. During training, Rosser received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman. Rosser is a 2008 graduate of South Lake High School.

-- Tom Jones, nationally known watercolorist, will be teaching a 2-day Watercolor Workshop at The South Lake Art League, 776 W. Montrose Street, downtown Clermont, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Jan. 8 - 9. Participants will paint 4 paintings, each on a half sheet of Arches Watercolor Paper. Members $120, non-members $130. Class is limited. -- Pastfinders Genealogical Society of South Lake

will feature their own Dottie Dill as presenter, 7:15 p.m., Jan. 8, at the Cooper Memorial Library in Clermont. -- The Clermont Historic Downtown Merchants have scheduled the Winter Art and Craft Festival from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10 and from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 11. -- Pastfinders Genealogical Society of South Lake: Jan. 14. This Computer Users Group which meets in the library at 1 p.m. is going back to basics with: getting the most out of Windows, web browsers, e-mail, graphics programs and word processors. -- Drawing Classes for teen and adults: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Jan. 15 through Feb. 19 at the South Lake Art League Gallery, 776 Montrose St. in Clermont. Artist and teacher Beth Kreutz, (MS/Art Education), will be teaching the 6-week course in drawing for teens and adults, ages 16 and older. -- Downtown Clermont Farmer's Market, scheduled from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. every Sunday featuring fresh produce, Yalaha Bakery bread, outdoor plants, honey and many other wonderful items. Shop the stores along Montrose or take time for a lunch at the three terrific restaurants in the area. For more information or to become a vendor, call 394-8618.

-- The FAITH Neighborhood Center is a non-profit organization, part of the Human Care Network, and is the lead agency in South Lake for providing aid to the needy. All services are free to those who are income eligible throughout south Lake County including the cities of Clermont, Minneola, Mascotte, Montverde and Groveland, and all points between and south to the Polk County line. Approximately 800 families per month are presently being served and with the down turn in the economy the number is growing every day. Because of the increased need, the shelves are emptying faster than the donations are coming through the door. Donations of clothing and small household items are also appreciated. For more information, call the Center at 429-1200 during operating hours: from 9 a.m. - noon Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays. The Center is located at 7432 S.R. 50, just east of Groveland.
