South Lake tops Leesburg 9-1 at 6A-5 tournament

David Wood threw five solid innings and South Lake scored seven runs in the fifth inning Tuesday to lead South Lake to a 9-1 win in the Class 6A-Distrit 5 baseball tournament at Ocala Vanguard High School.

The loss drops Leesburg to 5-21 on the season and ends its first campaign under coach Alan Hardcastle.

The Eagles will advance to play the winner of Tuesday's game between Ocala Vanguard and Gainesville. That game was not completed in time for this edition.

Tucker Ellis paced South Lake with two runs scored. The Eagles totalled seven hits off four Leesburg pitchers, with no player having multiple hits.

Wood picked up the win. He gave up two hits in five innings and struck out five.

Tyler Slayton pitched the final two innings for South Lake.

Leesburg managed four hits off South Lake's two pitchers. Jason Baita had a hit and scored Leesburg's lone run.

Tucker Long was tagged with the six, his sixth in as many decisions. He went four innings and gave up three runs -- none earned.

Cody Sellars, Kevin Lanier and Andrew Niglio followed Long to the mound for Leesburg.
