n The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail has scheduled a free scrub-jay orientation program on Saturday at the Trail, 11490 Monte Vista Rd.,Clermont. This is an opportunity for newcomers to become acquainted with The Florida Scrub-Jay, get to know the history of the bird and its fate if we do not protect and restore its habitat.
After a presentation on the porch of the Trailhouse, we will go out on the Trail to search for a family of scrub-jays and learn about their habitat. n Pastfinders Genealogical Society of South Lake have scheduled a meeting at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday at the Cooper Memorial Library, 821 W. Minneola Ave., Clermont. The speaker will be Circuit Court Judge Dick Singeltary, whose family has a long history in Lake County. Guests are welcome.
n Clermont Historic Downtown Merchants have scheduled a Fall Arts & Crafts Festival from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11 and from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12 along W. n LIFE, a social support program for widowed persons, has scheduled a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Leesburg Community Center, 109 E Dixie Ave, Leesburg. The program will feature the Gospel Notes' musical and informational program. Buffet is $10, call 787-0403 to reserve.
n Representative Ginny Brown-Waite has issued a reminder to all Fifth District high school students who are interested in applying to one of the service academies that all completed applications must be postmarked and mailed to her office no later than November 8, 2008. n Give a Kid a Backpack relies solely on donations and contributions to fund the backpacks and school supplies for the 115 million children in need around the world. $12,000 is required to provide 1000 backpacks with school supplies. The Backpack Foundation is selling coffee from Honduras, Ecuador and Dominican Republic in order to raise money, 100% of the proceeds from each bag of coffee will go directly to help purchase backpacks and school supplies. n SaveOne, a post-abortion healing Bible study that deals with deep issues of guilt and shame that some people experience after abortion, is scheduled from 6:30-8 p.m. every Thursday through August.
