South Lake volleyball
Hopes were high at South Lake, which hosted the District 4A-7 volleyball tournament. The Eagles carried a 16-6 record into the district final, going against Orlando Bishop Moore.
Unfortunately for South Lake, things didn't work out too well. Bishop Moore completed its perfect run to the district crown, winning nine-straight games in its three matches, the last three against the Eagles by a 25-12, 25-16, 25-12 score.
The result put South Lake on the road in the regional tournament. The Eagles played at Hudson, the winner of the 4A-8 district, on Tuesday. That didn't work out too well, either, as Hudson eliminated South Lake from the state tournament in four games.
South Lake was having similar success to Bishop Moore going into the district final. The Eagles opened 4A-7 play by defeating Kissimmee Poinciana in straight sets, 25-5, 25-12, 25-15. Aurora Newgard's 11 kills led the Eagle attack; Frankie Magliocchetti contributed five kills.
Bishop Moore advanced to the district semifinals with a 25-14, 25-6, 25-7 victory over St. Cloud.
In the district semifinals, Bishop Moore bounced Harmony 25-7, 25-8, 25-19, and South Lake knocked off Eustis 25-23, 25-20, 25-21. Leading the Eagles were Newgard with 10 kills and 17 assists and Jeassica McGregor with 10 kills and 12 assists. Eustis got nine kills from Victoria Parks and seven from Tawny Hoagland.es, the last three against the Eagles by a 25-12, 25-16, 25-12 score.
The result put South Lake on the road in the regional tournament. The Eagles will travel to play the winner of the 4A-8 district on Tuesday; favorites in that district were Brooksville Nature Coast and Hudson. Bishop Moore will host the loser in that district final on Tuesday.
