New Beginnings
'Quarter Auction' is today
New Beginnings, empowering people to live a responsible life, is hosting a "Quarter Auction" from 7 to 9 p.m., today at the Family Christian Center, 2500 S. U.S. Highway 27 in Clermont to raise funds and food items for local families in need.
Admission is $4 per person and preview seating begins at 6 p.m.
Bring your quarters to the auction and enjoy the fun for a great cause and enjoy refreshments, door prizes and more.
Guests that bring canned or boxed food items will receive one free raffle ticket for every two items.

Popular portrait artist to lead 2-day workshop
Participants will paint either a
kitty or their own pet from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the South Lake Art League's Cagan Studio, 16640 Cagan Crossings Blvd. Students will learn to take a photo of their pet, transfer it to canvas, and paint a likeness in oil. Class is for level 1 beginner and level 2 intermediate students.
The workshop is for adults and students age 13 and older.
Registration is a must for the class and provide photos of your pet in advance.
Workshop fee is $150 (SLAL members get a $15 discount).

South Lake County Biggest Winner Challenge
Chick-fil-A and Performance 360 have combined efforts to offer the 2013 Biggest Winner Challenge to launch South Lake into 1,000 pounds of weight loss in five weeks beginning on Monday.
Entry fee for the challenge is $99 per person and gives participants access to P360, Saturday group training sessions, and the chance to win $5,000. No membership is necessary.
The grand finale is planned for Feb. 19 at the Chick-fil-A in Clermont.

Skin cancer talk at
South Lake Hospital
Skin cancer is the topic of discussion at the January Health and Wellness Series from 6 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 21 at the National Training Center, 1935 Don Wickham Dr., in Clermont.
Dermatologist David Allyn, M.D. is the guest for the event.

Reporter Bob Kealing to be guest at the Library
The Cooper Memorial Library will present award winning reporter for WESH 2 News, and author Bob Kealing as he talks about Lake County's connection to a Florida music legend, Gram Parsons from
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 19 in room 108 at the Cooper Memorial Library, 2525 Oakley Seaver Dr., in Clermont.
This program will also feature
one-time Parson's friend and bandmate Jim Carlton and nationally-known guitarist and recording artist Forest Rodgers. The event is free to the public.
In Calling Me Home, Kealing traces the entire arc of Parsons's career, emphasizing his Southern roots, and drawing on dozens of new interviews as well as rare letters and photographs provided by Parsons's family and legendary photojournalist Ted Polumbaum.
Books will be available for purchase from Raintree Books and may be signed by the author.
