Giving Back to the Community
Earlier this season, Belk department stores nationwide gave 501 c (3) organizations a chance to earn money by getting involved with their Charity Sale. Lake Sumter SHRM (LSSHRM) members who meet in Leesburg are a local chapter of the national SHRM organization (Society for HR Management). LSSHRM board members decided to get involved and voted to give all the money collected from Belk ticket sales to two nonprofit organizations. The first nonprofit is the SHRM Foundation, Investing in the Future, a foundation that produces publications and educational resources to advance the HR professional, and the second nonprofit is Building Blocks Learning Center located in Clermont, who serve adults with developmental or physical disabilities by providing education and training programs.
Linda Hall, LSSHRM Workforce Readiness Chair and Judy Pike, SHRM Foundation Chair teamed together with LSSHRM President, Kelly Monaco to reach out to LSSHRM members as well as the community and sell tickets at the Belk store in Leesburg. "It was a pleasure to work with store manager, Drew Phipps, and a retail store that gives back to the community. Drew Phipps gave us encouragement, supplied LSSHRM with tickets and provided a table from which LSSHRM advertised the two charities and proudly sold Belk tickets" said Linda Hall, Office Coordinator at the Community Foundation in Clermont.
On December 14, a Christmas party was celebrated by Building Blocks Learning Center at the Community Foundation of South Lake. A check for $515 was presented to Dr. Paula Whetro, Sandy Castor and Marsha Cuascut of Building Blocks by Dawn Shovestull, PHR from LSSHRM. Dawn Shovestull is Director of HR for Restor Telecom, Inc. located in Leesburg and President Elect for LSSHRM, Inc.
Thanks to all who participated in this Giving Back to the Community Event. Please support Belk, a retail store that gives to charity through people like you and me. The Belk Charity Sale gave LSSHRM members an opportunity to sell tickets to customers and share the money with two nonprofit organizations that give so much to our community all year long.
At the Community Foundation of South Lake, the motto is: "Connecting people that care with causes that matter" and "I was proud to take part in this event" said Linda Hall.
