A weekly column that reprints some of the more interesting news stories that have appeared over the years in the South Lake Press.
Clermont High school adds a golf team
Clermont High School now has a golf team, the first in many years since the Modica brothers and Jackie Gaines brought home so many honors. Coaches are Brian Roddy and Carol Ploszaj. Home course is Green Valley Country Club.
Roddy is employed full-time in golf course maintenance on the Magnolia Course at Walt Disney World and is the teaching professional at Green Valley. Miss Polszaj teaches at Clermont Junior High School.
The Clermont team has two seniors, Mickey Olivenbaum and Lance Walsworth; five juniors, Bradley Beerbohm, Matt Jones, Danny Lindsey, Craig Stephens and Gary Surin; four sophomores, Jake Doty, Eric Eyerly, Tim Misuraca and Terry McCarthy; two ninth graders, T.J. Garrett and Scott Severinhaus.
A special mention goes to 10th grader Carolyn Mathieson, the only girl right now. The coaches hope more girls will join this promising and flourishing new program at CHS.
'Good Morning America' from top of Citrus Tower
NBC weatherman Willard Scott often recognizes people celebrating their longevity of life. Cler-mont's Paul Halstead, who just turned 101, received a nice letter from Scott, adding his own good wishes to those of many who recognized this special milestone for this very special resident.
During the Clermont Centen-nial in 1984, Scott showed the Centennial logo T-shirt on the network's "Today" show and told all about the celebration.
Also during the Centennial week, Mayor Charley Beals gave the "Good Morning, America" welcome from the top level of the Citrus Tower. The spot was shot by Channel 9 and beamed to New York.

-- Congratulations to John Clay-pool, son of Mrs. Shirley Claypool, recently selected as the Good Citizen of the Class of 1987 at Groveland High School.
-- The Junior-Senior Class Prom of Clermont High School was held at Orange Lake Country Club's clubhouse on U.S. Highway 192. Following the prom Ron and Donna Clarke and two of their children, Raechel and Ronnie, members of the Junior class, hosted a breakfast.
Assisting were Werner and Marty Heinrich, John and Joanne Hughes, Jim and Brenda Mayer and Wanda Cox. Attending were Principal David Coggshall and his wife, Carol; assistant principal Bill Sullivan and his wife, Rosa; and teacher Gary Kinninger.
-- Don and Mary Ann Bailey gave an update on their subdivision called Lake Monte Vista, located on Monte Vista Road. All available lots in the first phase have been sold; two homes are complete, a third should be done in six weeks and a fourth should break ground in the near future.
-- Food prices at Winn Dixie: Heinz catsup, 32-ounce bottle, 79cents; Superbrand milk, gallon, $1.99; Maxwell House coffee, 1-pound bag, $2.18; Dixie Crystal sugar, 5-pound bag, 99 cents; Superbrand cottage cheese, 1-pound size, 59 cents; Fab detergent, 42-ounce size, 99 cents; Gold Medal flour, 5-pound bag, 69 cents; Betty Crocker cake mixes, 78 cents.

45 Years Ago -- 1967
-- The Clermont Woman's Club met April 4 to celebrate its 40th anniversary and honor its past presidents.
-- Miss Gloria Fairchild, daughter of Mrs. June Fairchild and the late Mr. Joe E. Fairchild, was honored as the "Young American of the Day" salute on Radio Station WKIS in Orlando. She is a senior and captain of Groveland High School's varsity cheerleaders.
-- Weather for the week of March 28-April 3 was recorded at a high of 86 and a low of 48.
-- Grocery listings at Winn Dixie show that Swift's Premium canned hams sold at $2.99 for a 4-pound ham; Copeland all-meat franks were 49 cents for a pound; 24 ounces of Crisco oil was 48 cents; while a quart jar of Kraft Miracle Whip was also 48 cents.
-- At Publix Market, Maxwell House coffee was selling for 48 cents for a 1-pound can; ground beef was selling at 3 pounds for $1.47; a 5-pound bag of Gold Medal flour was 48 cents; and Pillsbury assorted cake mixes were 3 for 88 cents.
-- Clermont Mayor Joe BonJorn will throw the first ball as the Clermont-Minneola Little Major League baseball season begins play. Sponsors of the six teams are: Tower Chemical, Clermont Kiwanis Club, First Federal Savings and Loan, Lions Club, Citizens Bank of Clermont and Stalnaker Chevrolet.
-- First Baptist Church of Groveland honored Dr. and Mrs. T.G. McFadden, pioneer residents of Groveland, who are moving to Sarasota. Coming here in the early 1920s, McFadden operated a drug store for many years. He later was engaged in the insurance business. A short time ago, he received an award from Florida Power Corporation in recognition of his many years of service as company agent in Groveland.
-- Mr. and Mrs. E. Bruce Hunt celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary March 30 with a family gathering and dinner at their home on Main Street in Minneola. Married March 31, 1917, in the Episcopal Church in Orlando, the Hunts have lived in Minneola since their marriage. Mr. Hunt was born on the north shore of Lake Minneola at the home of his parents, pioneer settlers in this area. Mrs. Hunt is a native of Canada.
