Transform your backyard into a colorful sanctuary
Special to the South Lake Press
Area residents can learn how to transform their backyards into colorful sanctuaries for birds and butterflies is a special seminar to be held May 12 at B.B. Brown's Gardens in Clermont.
The seminar will teach participants how their backyard can be transformed from a monochromatic sea of grass to a colorful sanctuary for people and wildlife alike through the use of properly selected, carefully installed and easily maintained Central Florida trees, shrubs, wildflowers and groundcovers.
"Birds and butterflies will flock to your yard when provided with the necessities such as food, water, cover and places to raise young," said Cathy Brown, owner of B.B.Brown's Gardens and host of National Wildlife Federa-tion's Habitat Stewards Pro-gram.
Brown has been designing and installing native wildlife landscapes in backyards, schools and public places in Central Florida for 16 years.
She'll share her knowledge in a workshop entitled "Color-ful Landscaping with Florida's Best Plants" which will be held from 8 to 11 a.m., May 12.
The program will help participants analyze their specific landscaping needs by discussing their soil, water availability, lighting, and by providing a hands-on demonstration of proper planting techniques. Brown will share with the audience her favorite plants, including Florida natives, and describe how they grow and their best use in participants' landscape.
The program will conclude with a walk around the gardens to see how the plants look in the landscape.
The cost of this program is $20 for members of the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail (www.scrubjaytrail.org) and $25.00 for nonmembers.
