Lake County School District moves Maintenance Dept.

Staff Report

The Lake County School District's Maintenance Department moved its base of operations for the first time in more than 30 years.

In early 2011, the school board agreed to an interlocal agreement with the Lake County Commission and the city of Tavares that transferred the maintenance facility, between Alfred and Ianthe streets in Tavares, in exchange for a 20-acre future school site located on Woodlea Road and $300,000.

With more than 100 maintenance employees and dozens of support trucks, finding a suitable location was a challenge; however, the task presented an opportunity. The decision was made to decentralize the department at two locations: The old Umatilla Elementary site at 220 N. Central Ave. and the old Mascotte Elementary site at 410 Alpine St.

"If I can reduce travel time, I can increase time on task and that is the goal of any maintenance operation," said Mike Corr, director of the Maintenance Department.

Each maintenance shop -- Maintenance North Office and Maintenance South Office -- handles facilities in its service areas of the school district.
