Lakes to get 'Outstanding Florida Waters' designation
Local residents will have the opportunity to discuss and hear the recommendation of the Department of Environmental Regulation regarding the designation of the Clermont Chain of Lakes as "Outstanding Florida Waters."
Based on a review of available information, including public comments, DER's tentative recommendation is for only the central portion of the basin known as the Clermont Chain of Lakes. This includes the 17-mile area from southern Lake Louisa to the Villa City structure at Lake Emma.
Specifically, the following areas is proposed for designation: Lake Louisa, Lake Susan, Lake Crescent, Lake Minnehaha, Lake Winona, Lake Palatlakaha, Lake Hiawatha, Lake Minneola, Lake Wilson, Lake Cook, Cherry Lake, Lake Hunt, Lake Stewart, Lake Lucy, Lake Emma and the waterways connecting these lakes.
The department's recommendation does not include the areas called Big and Little creeks, or the northernmost segment of the Palatlakaha River (from the Villa City structure to Lake Harris.)
Library honors volunteers at open house
Cooper Memorial Library honored its volunteers at the fourth annual open house in the new children's section. Librarian Bonnie Homan (Ray) commended the volunteers for their many hours of service, 63 hours per week on the front desk and 61 hours per week in behind the scenes work, plus at least two hours per week by members of the Clermont Kiwanis Club, who man the desk on Thursday evenings.
Volunteers honored were Dorothy Maurer, Bernice Terry, Katherine Black, Delores Newman, Alice Tilden, Todd Cobun, Jo Arnold, Tom Ioder, Betty Ioder, Eleanora Andres, Billie King, Angela Brinkerhoff, Jean Molye, Louise Paxton, June Funke, Sally Pelfrey, Pat Murphy, Fay Sears, Evelyn Markland, Madge Coppens, Alice Beebe, Joe Wiebush, Dotty Wiebush, Darlyne Johnstone, Florence DePalma, Ethel Hobeck, Dorothy Straight, Dot Kirby, Ruth Hyland and Howard Barry.
Library Board President Alice Tilden introduced new board members: Don Wickham, Todd Cobun, Betty Clay and Chris Williams. Honored were retiring board members Ben Jarrett, Ann Dupee and Dayle Matthews, who represents Clermont on the Lake County Library Board and this year serves as chairman.
Other board members are Honey Jean Smoak, Betty Hovis, Marilyn Priebe, Keith Bowie, Mayor Bob Pool as the city's representative, and John Greenlee, master of ceremonies for the afternoon.

K Blue skies prevailed for the annual Groveland-Mascotte Chamber of Commerce Christmas parade. First Baptist Church of Groveland won the Grand Marshal's Award; the City of Mascotte received honorable mention; Merchant's Award, Peoples State Bank; honorable mention, Groveland Squares; President's Award, Groveland Elementary School; South Lake Moose Lodge, honorable mention.
There were 70 units in the parade, including 21 floats. State Sen. Richard Langley of Clermont was grand marshal. Superintendent of Schools Freddie Garner of Groveland was parade marshal, and Mr. E. L. Puryear of Groveland was honorary marshal.
-- Fifteen South Lake County students are included in the 19th annual edition of "Who's Who Among American High School Students, 1984-85." Clermont High School: Kip Childers, Pam Garrett, Craig Ogilvie, Vicky Pedersen, Laurie L. Strang, Claude Zadora, Kevin Curtis, Nancy Jones, Pamela Parsons, Don Smith and Tina Swearingin. Groveland High School: Karen Lynn Postell, Andres Valdez, Melody Sapp and Scott W. Wilbanks.
-- Clermont Neighborhood Center had an increase in the number of requests for help in November. With 10 volunteers working 96 hours, 271 families were served. First Baptist Church operates a shopping bus on Friday mornings.
-- Clermont High School Key Club President Craig Ogilvie announced that 68 students have joined the Key Club this year, the first year that girls have been invited to join.
-- Clermont Kiwanis honored Clermont Triathlon volunteers and participants. Dennis Horton, Ed Augustine and Steve Asmann were recognized for their performance in a triathlon relay.
-- An effort is under way in Florida to have English designated as the official state language. The Florida English Campaign is attempting to place on the ballot a measure that would insure the official recognition of one language while allowing the use of other languages on an unofficial basis.
-- Patti-Lu's Casuals received December's Community Appearance Award. Located at 702 Montrose St., the former bank building was remodeled and restored to make a unique setting for this special retail clothing shop. Owner Sarah Hogan and daughter Whitney received the award from Clermont Chamber of Commerce directors Ken Peach and David Branson.
-- Larry and Maritza Godbey have purchased Sir William's Beauty Shop in the South Lake Plaza from Bill and Ruth Beard. Staff includes Christy Moherek, Consuelo Rubio, Ann Burdette, Janie Thrower, Joy Hydzik, Bill Beard, Tammy Riddle and the Godbeys.
