GROVELAND – One person died and three others were injured when three vehicles plowed into the side of a semi truck trying to turn onto a busy highway.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators say the truck was heading east on Independence Boulevard and had come to a stop at the intersection with U.S. Hwy. 27. The truck driver, Tyrone Ivy, 43, of Orlando, reportedly began to make a left turn onto US 27 and was struck broadside by two pickup trucks heading south on the highway.

Kevin Cottle, 21, of Leesburg, died at the scene when his pickup truck became wedged under the truck trailer, destroying the passenger compartment of the pickup.

The driver of a 2014 Nissan SUV, Shannon Hennessy, 26, of Leesburg, was taken to South Lake Hospital with injuries when her vehicle also struck the trailer, and the driver of a 2000 Ford pickup, Terry Fletcher, 62, of Lady Lake, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with injuries.

Two other people, Lawrence Weimer, 28 or Orlando, and his passenger, Justin Watson, 31 of Fruitland Park, suffered minor injuries when Weimer's 2006 Ford pickup struck the truck's trailer. All the victims were wearing seat belts.
