CLERMONT — A motorist accused of striking a Clermont pedestrian and leaving him on the street to die almost a year ago was arrested Monday night.

David Joseph Sheets, 50, of Groveland, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death in the Dec. 6, 2015 incident that killed Aaron Zacharias.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Zacharias, 26, was crossing Lakeshore Drive near Preston Cove Road in Clermont at about 11:30 that night, and was not in a crosswalk when an unknown vehicle hit him.

Troopers said they didn’t have a description of the suspected vehicle at the time, but they believed it had recent bodywork done due to small pieces of what appeared to be "bondo" — which is a putty used in automotive body work — left at the scene.

Troopers could not be reached Tuesday for comment. It is unclear as to how they were able to connect the crash to Sheets, but a probable cause affidavit released Tuesday accuses Sheets of hitting Zacharias with a 1968 Chevrolet and leaving the scene without offering any aide or leaving any identifying information.

Sheets was released from the Lake County Jail Tuesday after posting a $25,000 bond.
