Town: Eustis

Branch of service and rank: Air Force, senior master sergeant

Enlisted or drafted? Enlisted. I had a choice of either to go to school or go into the military. I chose the military. I looked around and decided the Air Force was the best for me.

What did you do in the service? I went into the administration field, and then I became a PME instructor. After that I became a first sergeant, then I became an instructor of first sergeants.

Why do you feel the job was important? As administrator, I had to get my job done so people could get their jobs done. As PME instructor, I liked the idea of being able to influence supervisors doing their jobs. As a first sergeant, my job was to help improve morale, and as an instructor of first sergeants, I loved the idea of being able to pass on to future first sergeants the good and bad of being a first sergeant.

What is your most important memory from the service? My four years in England as first sergeant. It was during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

What did you like least? There's nothing that I liked least.

What would you like people to understand about war? Unfortunately, war is necessary. We hope we never have another war but it's best to be prepared. My belief is that offense is only as good as our defense.
