GROVELAND — Police said a man shot his girlfriend repeatedly Monday following an argument about a child who wouldn't eat.

According to Fred Jones, Lake County Sheriff’s spokesman, deputies responded to the Mascotte Empire Road home of Stephen Collins, 38, around 5:30 p.m. to reports of a shooting. While en route, they were notified the shooter was still there.

Collins and Amberlee Price, 32, were reportedly arguing over a child not eating his dinner when Collins ordered the child and Price out of his home. Price left with the child and attempted to leave in a pickup, but Collins grabbed a gun, followed them outside and allegedly fired several shots into the truck.

According to a report, officers found Price with multiple gunshot wounds, and she identified Collins, her boyfriend, as the shooter. The child was sitting beside Price but was not injured.

Price was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries but was listed in stable condition Tuesday.

As officers arrived, Collins reportedly walked toward them with his hands raised and was taken into custody. Officers said he admitted to the shooting but claimed self-defense.

Collins was charged with attempted murder and remained in the Lake County Jail Tuesday without bail.
