Town: Clermont

Branch of service and rank: Army, master sergeant, Vietnam War

Enlisted or drafted? I enlisted in the New Hampshire National Guard while still in high school. That ended when I graduated. The next month, I enlisted in the army. It was a continuation.

What did you do in the service? Air defense missile battalion (that got exciting when they told Russia to get out of Cuba), general support, special forces, demolitions, scuba and ROTC instructor. Just about everything.

Why was it important? Everything had to work.

What is your most important memory? I spent four years in Oklahoma as a college ROTC instructor, and I really liked the experience.

What did you like least? Going out on an ambush in the middle of the night and listening to all the little noises. They could make you nervous.

What would you like people to understand about war? It's not a pleasant experience, even though there are some good times in the period.
