Lake County commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday, with Commissioner Leslie Campione dissenting, on a tentative property tax rate that is 18 percent higher than the current year's rate.
It would mean an increase of $109 for a home with a taxable value of $100,000.
However, several commissioners said they want to find ways to cut the budget further, lowering the tax rate, before the final budget is approved in September.
The proposed budget includes a $3.6 million increase for the sheriff to fund deputy salaries and a slight increase in the budgets of all other constitutional officers; a $1 million more in the parks budget; $2 million more in the Lake EMS budget to fund capital needs and salary increases; and $1.2 million more for the county fire department budget, among other things.
The tentative rate can still come down before the commission approves its final budget in September, but it cannot go higher.
