For a majority of college football teams. A bowl trip in Florida is a vacation of sorts.

For Florida, it’s just another day at the beach.

The Gators will be playing in their 43rd bowl game when they face Iowa in the Outback Bowl on Monday. Florida is 21-21 all-time in the 42 played so far despite having 23 of those games played in the state of Florida.

Some have the games featuring Florida in Florida have been memorable. Some have not.

Here are the top 10 Gator bowl games in UF’s home state and five you’d like to forget (the years of the games reflect the season, not necessarily the year the game was played):

1. 2008 BCS National Championship Game

In Miami Gardens, the Gators played Oklahoma and former defensive coordinator Bob Stoops for all the marbles and found a way to stuff the Sooners’ high-powered offense featuring Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford.

2. 1962 Gator Bowl

Florida (and its 6-4 record) was the third choice to face mighty Penn State, Lambert Trophy winners at 9-1. The Nittany Lions were nine-point favorites, but Gene Ellenson’s new “monster” defense stifled Penn State in a 17-7 Florida win.

3. 1966 Orange Bowl

Florida had the Heisman winner in Steve Spurrier, but it was sophomore running back Larry Smith who stole the show with 187 rushing yards, including a 94-yard TD scamper in the third quarter of a 27-12 win over Georgia Tech.

4. 2001 Orange Bowl

Maryland came in as the ACC champs and Florida came in bitterly disappointed after missing out on the SEC title game because of a late loss to Tennessee. No problem. UF won 56-23 in what turned out to be Spurrier’s last game as UF’s coach.

5. 1969 Gator Bowl

There was so much drama because word had leaked that Ray Graves was out and Doug Dickey, the coach of the opposing Tennessee team, would be Florida’s new coach. The Gators won 14-13 in the last game for Graves.

6. 2010 Outback Bowl

It was the last game of Urban Meyer’s UF career and — although nobody knew it at the time — Joe Paterno’s last bowl game. Ahmad Black’s TD interception return clinched it for the Gators 37-24 over Penn State.

7. 1980 Tangerine Bowl

One year after 0-10-1, Charley Pell wanted to finish off his second season with a positive note and did so with a 35-20 win over Maryland behind game MVP Cris Collinsworth.

8. 1997 Citrus Bowl

If nothing else, this game established a UF record that may stand forever, as Fred Taylor rushed 43 times for 234 yards in his final game wearing the orange and blue in UF’s 21-6 win over the Nittany Lions.

9. 1998 Orange Bowl

One of Florida’s best defensive teams destroyed Syracuse and Donovan McNabb 31-10.

10. 1953 Gator Bowl

It all had to start somewhere and this was it, a 14-13 win over Tulsa in Florida’s first bowl game.

… And five to forget.

1. 1975 Gator Bowl

A really good Florida team thought it deserved better and didn’t show up on a rainy night in a 13-0 loss to the Terrapins.

2. 2015 Citrus Bowl

Coach Jim McElwain’s first season started with a bang but ended with a thud, a 41-7 loss to Michigan.

3. 1973 Tangerine Bowl

Florida worked it out for the game to be moved from Orlando to Florida Field. It was freezing. Miami of Ohio (and Ron Zook) won 16-7.

4. 2003 Outback Bowl

In Zook’s second season, the Gators were dismantled by Iowa 37-17.

5. 1999 Citrus Bowl

Despite going up against an interim coach in Bobby Williams (Nick Saban had left for LSU), Florida couldn’t hold a fourth-quarter lead and lost 37-34 to Michigan State.
